This collection of Southern Hemisphere Deep-sea Corals consists of antipatherians (black corals), gorgonians (soft corals) and scleractinians (stony corals). This includes both live caught, sub-fossil and fossil material. Some samples date back to ca. 20,000 years before present; some of the un-dated material (based on work on samples sent to Californian Institute of Technology) are likely to be very much older. The collection is housed at CSIRO Marine Laboratories in Hobart, Tasmania.

The O&A Marine Plankton Collection comprises of historical zooplankton samples collected between 1940 - 1996. The collection is housed at the EcoSciences Precinct, Dutton Park, QLD. The collection includes: (1) Phytoplankton and zooplankton samples collected by the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) Australian Continuous Plankton Recorder survey (AusCPR) (2) Zooplankton samples from the IMOS National Reference Stations program. (3) Detailed information regarding the plankton collection held at Dutton Park was added in August 2014 (refer to: Plankton_Historic_samples_ sorted_ by_AF_24_06_2014.xlsx). Note that this list is incomplete and is currently only a working list, as such it be updated regularly. Refer to document link below. The collection includes data collected by the following vessels: 1. Diamantina voyages 1959-1963: Indian Ocean, Western Australia, GAB, Jjakarta, Sumatra, North West, during 1970-1973 (1973 Freemantle to Hobart). 2. Derwent Hunter 1954-1961: South East Australia (1959-60), NSW coast (Port Stephens-Jervis Bay) and Tasman Sea (1960), Jervis Bay 1961, 3. Courageous (1978) 4. Gascoyne: 1962, SE Indian Ocean Coastal Station Data: 1. Port Hacking stations: 1959, 1968-1971 2. Batemans Bay 1959-1960, 3. Bermagui 1957-1960 4. Jervis Bay 1958-1960 4. Eden NSW: 1956-1960

This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Soela cruise SO 1/87. This cruise took place in the east Indian Ocean during 10 January - 7 February 1987, under the leadership of Tim Davis. Biological data collected on this cruise include a large number of scombrid larvae (particularly southern bluefin tuna) for biological studies and information on the vertical distribution of the larvae. Phytoplankton and zooplankton samples to investigate the plankton variability. Three tuna from troll fishing and a collection of tuna of all species for scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Information on experimental fishing and sampling methods and data from the EK 400. Please note: This metadata record is a preliminary entry derived from information in the cruise plan and/or cruise report. Individual data types - which may span several cruises - will be indexed separately within this metadata system in due course.

This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Soela cruise SO 8/87. This cruise took place in the east Indian Ocean during 4 November - 15 December 1987, under the leadership of Tim Davis and J. May. Biological data collected on this cruise include abundance and growth rate of southern bluefin tuna larvae from a total of 240 stations. Information on the vertical distribution of the tuna larvae in relation to the thermocline. Tuna larvae samples to study the relation between food availablity and abundance, diet and growth. Specimens for electrophoresis and 169 tuna larvae were identified and their pigment distribution mapped. One tuna was caught from light trap tests, the catches being mainly stomatopods (crustaceans) and myctophids (lanternfish). Please note: This metadata record is a preliminary entry derived from information in the cruise plan and/or cruise report. Individual data types - which may span several cruises - will be indexed separately within this metadata system in due course.

This cruise took place in waters off the east and west coasts of Tasmania during 9-22 July 1987, under the leadership of Nick Elliott. Biological data collected on this cruise include orange roughy catches and catch rates for demersal trawl tows on the St Patrick's Head and the Sandy Cape grounds. Orange roughy length frequency, sex ratios, gonad maturation stage and stomach contents. 7 species of sharks and one unidentified species from the two fishing grounds including catch rates, length frequency, sex ratios and reproductive maturity stage of females. EK 400 acoustic survey data on the two fishing grounds. Hydrographic sampling from Sandy Cape to Storm Bay. Blue grenadier larvae samples from Sandy Cape to Tasman Head, and off Maria Island. This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Soela cruise SO 2/87. This cruise took place in the Southern Ocean off the west coast of Tasmania and in the Tasman Sea off the northeast coast of Tasmania during 1-14 April 1987, under the leadership of F.R. Harden Jones. Biological data collected on this cruise include length frequency, weight, gonad weight and stage from 169 orange roughy samples. 164 orange roughy stomachs were examined, 32% were empty. Of the remainder, 95% contained crustacea and 23% fish. 7 roughy had squid parts in their stomachs and one had polychaete remains. Otoliths were collected for age determinations and ovaries from 36 females for fecundity determinations. Other species caught were the spiky oreo (Neocyttus rhomboidalis) and two large (true) hake (Merluccius australis). Acoustic and echosounder data of fish shoals. Three phyllosoma larvae samples from codend liner whilst conducting a midwater trawl on the Sandy Cape Ground.
